My Big Fat Greek Holiday !

Here i am on a flight from Abu Dhabi to Athens surrounded by a completely noisy bunch of people who totally feel at home in the flight !

My first impression of the Greeks - more like the loud, flamboyant and fun loving Punjabis . I initially thought the entire group of about 10 people were part of the same family and later realized they were complete strangers .
People were actually standing on the aisle ; chatting , laughing and passing snacks around, this was one fun 6 hour flight , felt more like a local bus ride !

Welcome to Greece ! said the lady sitting next to me who was a 75 year old Greek woman. She said , "this is how we Greeks are, we are always loud so don't worry if you see a lot of this when you are on your holiday "....

Athens - The Cradle of Western Civilization

Athens is a very lively and relatively crowded city . Walk down the flea market -Monastiraki, if you love to shop for little trinkets and souvenirs to take back home. Put your haggling skill to good use as pretty much everything is over-priced because of the number of tourists thronging the place.

Despite being one of the largest economic centers in south eastern Europe, you will still see the rich heritage and ancient monuments around the city.

Athens is home to the UNESCO world heritage site - the Acropolis of Athens , which stands high on a hilltop above the city.
It has some very famous monuments of architectural and historical importance like Parthenon and the  Temple of Athena.
A trek up the hill will be a bit tiresome because of the uneven path leading to the acropolis. But once you are on the hill top it is so worth it. They are such magnificent structures. You just need to stand and gaze at the structures and you will feel more and more amazed as you see the intricate design and symmetry .

Evening would be good time to take a walk through the city checking out some landmarks dating back to 18th century.

Vegetarian's Paradise

The place is scattered with tavernas - they are small Greek restaurants serving authentic Greek food. Good news to vegetarians - there are some amazing vegetarian Greek food that you must try .
You will notice that everything is served in large portions enough for 3 people by Indian standards. But it is rude to ask the restaurant to reduce the portion , some chefs actually get offended if you ask them to serve you less. And trust me as friendly as the Greeks are, you don't want to be standing in front of an annoyed Greek shouting at you !

Here is a quick look at my top 3 favorite Greek food.

Yamista
Greek Salad
Yamista - This was something i ate pretty much in every taverna. Beautifully cooked tomatoes and capsicum stuffed with flavoured rice. Always a delight to eat something with strong flavours while you are in the European countries. And this one was loaded with flavours.

The authentic Greek salad with a very generous chunk of feta cheese and a glass of good Santorini red wine ...

Tzatziki
Tzatziki - Made of Greek yoghurt  with cucumbers and olive oil. This is the exotic Greek version of the Indian cucumber raita but with some added flavour of olive oil
and vinegar.

Volkan Beer, which is a Greek beer made from local ingredients. The water for the beer is filtered through the lava rock filter which gives a very fresh and earthy after taste. Not for everybody's taste buds, but a must try .

Mikonos - Let the Party Begin !

After a day and half around the ancient city it was time to head out for some hard core partying.
There are ferries going to the island of Mikonos from Athens. It is about 5-6 hour ferry ride . Find a spot by the window and take a nice nap. You will need all the energy once you are in Mikonos !

Mikonos is a beautiful island and you will see quaint little structures painted in blue with white cobbled streets . Daytime is ideal for you to walk around the streets and just take in the pretty sight.
You will see that every house, shop, restaurant is painted in blue and white. Blue is the color that wards off evil eye and as a tradition the entire island is painted blue and white.

As the sun goes down ,the island lights up and comes alive. All the tiny structures which were closed during the day were actually clubs which now had loud techno and trans playing .
Club hopping is what you can do the entire night as most of the places are open till 3 AM in the morning. The last bus leaves from the harbor to the city at 2 AM. So you are covered with transportation back to your hotel.
Party on !

Serene Santorini ...

My personal favourite in Greece -  Santorini .
Another 3 hour ferry from Mikonos took us to Santorini . Even the cool wind that was blowing felt different from the other 2 cities.
Santorini is the largest island and what was left of the enormous volcanic eruption that caused one huge portion of the island to go under sea making it a crescent shaped island.
The city is built on the top crest of the island which steeply slopes down towards the sea.

What should you do in Santorini - Actually nothing .....
The place is so beautiful you just need to walk around the beautiful island and soak it in .

You will find the place dotted with pretty white painted houses with a lot of blue domed churches . Yes , the very famous blue domed church that you must have seen in every other Hollywood and Bollywood movie is Santorini.

Oia in Santorini has one of the most beautiful sunsets . If you are lucky enough to get a good spot along the walk way ,you will actually get a perfect view of the sun slipping down the horizon.

Santorini Caves

This is an interesting concept and i had to write about it....

The caves were alternate options of living used by the crew members of the ships that docked in the island. As the crew members were poorer and could not afford the houses in the island , they dug caves along the volcanic terrain and set it up as a home with basic necessities

Ironically, the poor man's cave is one of the most sought after holiday homes currently listed on airbnb !

If you are able to schedule your travel to clash with a full moon my suggestion would be to do so . Santorini on a full moon night is a sight to behold. The cherry on the cake for me was the blood moon while i was in Santorini. Couldn't have asked for perfect ending to a perfect trip !

If you are someone who loves a holiday with a good mix of culture tours , club hopping and relax with a glass of fine wine and great food - the Greek Islands should be on your list .

Manali - an unforgettable experience ..

One of my best travel experiences in Himachal till date - Manali ....My trip to Manali was one of the triggers to start travelling extensively in the Northern part of India , especially Himachal Pradesh and Uttrakand ...
It was December 22nd 2008. I was damn tired and fast asleep in the bus that i boarded from Delhi the previous night after a long day at work . Opened my eyes to see the bus driving through a winding path up the mountain and snow on both sides. It is a sight that is still so fresh in my head.....This was the first time i saw snow for real !
Quick one for the trivia lovers - The name Manali is regarded as the derivative of 'Manu-Alaya' which literally means 'the abode of Manu' , the first man as per Hindu mythology.

Best time to visit Manali is from June to October which is the tourist season with good weather. But my favourite is the winter season. Nothing like seeing the mountains in their full glory in the peak of winter .

You can either go to Solang Valley or Rotang pass or both depending on when you plan to travel. Rotang Pass remains closed from November till about May due to heavy snowfall. So all you trekkers will have to plan it some time in early June -July to experience Rotang. Also keep in mind that there is a permit required to travel up and beyond Rotang Pass.

Solang Valley
Solang valley on the other hand is accessible during December as well.
Solang Valley
I had a blast in Solang valley from skiing to sliding in the snow to riding a yak !

Hadimba Temple

Usually i'm not much of a temple hopper while travelling. But Hadimba temple really intrigued me mainly for being a shrine built for a demoness. Now, that's not something you find everyday....

Hadimba Temple
Unlike other extravagant structures this is a simple shrine with wooden doors and walls. What also interested me was that the walls of the temple was decorated with head of deers and goats and antelopes.
I was told these were offered as sacrifice to the demoness and then put on the wall of the temple.

Sure did give a very eerie feeling to the whole place !.....

The temple was thronged by tourists, so i decided to move away from the crowd and walked towards the forest !

Heads deers and antelopes offered as sacrifice
Tall deodar trees surrounded the temple. As i walked towards the forest there was suddenly no sound but just the swish of the trees as the cold December wind blew through the woods. A must do for all the nature lovers out there. Go take a walk in the forest behind the temple ...

By the banks of Beas ...

The river Beas flows through Manali . For the rafting enthusiasts, there is a white water rafting stretch along the river.
Not a huge fan of rafting hence i settled on the rocks by the side of the river with my camera and chai. Awesome combination when the temperature is 10 degree centigrade and the view is so beautiful that you don't want to go indoors.

Super ice cold water !
Listen to the gurgling water flowing through the rocks.... It is a meditation in itself.
And the water is super ice cold as it is flowing down from the snow capped mountains.
Do dip your legs in the river to experience the numbing cold water !

Food glorious food ...
Being a vegetarian , one thing i lose out pretty much in most places is the food....

Food in Manali was awesome. Nothing very exotic , but the freshness and simplicity made it one of the best food I have had during my travels in the Himachal . My food throughout my stay was pretty much roti - subji and dal chawal in the small hotels in Old Manali.

With a mixed bag of experiences and feelings, thus ended my first encounter with snow. As I boarded the bus to head back home, felt pretty overwhelmed while looking through the photos in my camera. With a very peaceful mind I closed my eyes and re-lived the experience as the bus started towards home....

Manali is a must do for everyone . So go on, plan your next trip to the abode of Manu and have a blast !

Goa - Sun and Sand !

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Goa .
Sandy beaches , Barbecuess ..... Party all night .... get wasted like there is no tomorrow ! Well yeah , while all of this is true, there is another side to it which I discovered during my trip to Goa.

Colva Beach - As the sun set ......

Contrary to the commercial aspect of the place, Goa actually is rich in culture, tradition and not to forget food for all the foodies out there ....
With a multicultural past, the customs of the Goans is a beautiful mix of their people , festivals, music and dance. My first impression of the people in Goa - i mean the locals - they are very warm and happy .

My stay was in an apartment owned by a local family in Goa . Set in suburban South Goa, it was a simple apartment with a small market place and eating joints round.
This made us to actually go to the local market and do some grocery shopping while on vacation ! And i loved the experience.

As my trip was during Christmas time I was warned by a lot of friends that it will be crowded and travelling with a kid will be very difficult.

Mentally prepared to handle crowded beaches in the evening and with a plan B to manage my daughter, we stepped out into the streets.....

Au contraire ; It was nice and pleasant as we walked down the street; the small shops on both sides of the street were opening their shutters and greeted us with a warm smile.
As the sun set, the pretty lights came up on all houses. Stars ,Christmas trees and snow man shining in the dark. The place just turned into glittering fairyland !
As the cool December evening breeze slowly touched my face , Church bells rang and the choir singing 'Silent Night ' floated in the air ......

At that moment I was glad to have chosen South Goa as my first trip to Goa.
I couldn't have planned for a better vacation.....

Beaches , Beaches everywhere ......

Goa and beaches are synonyms. The beaches that you find in South Goa are clean and less crowded.
While travelling with a kid that is one thing you would keep in mind, to spend quality time on the beach building sand castle ! Colva and Benaulim beach were exactly that. Not very crowded and the greyish white sand was the perfect location for my daughter to settle down with her shovel and for me with my camera and a drink.

And of course do not miss dolphin watching at the Palolem beach enroute to butterfly island.
It is recommended to go early in the morning to be able to sight at least a couple of dolphins. We were fortunate enough to get a good view of the beautiful creatures jumping right next to our boat.
And butterfly island is a tiny secluded island about 20 mins by boat. The white sand and the clear blue water was the ideal spot for some lovely shots of the ocean hitting the rocks.

As the day came to an end , nothing like sitting and watching the sun slide down the horizon . The view is so beautiful, this was more like a ritual on all the 5 days I was in Goa ! The experience of watching the Sun slowly glide down the horizon is always a different one every time.

Culture Unlimited

This was something totally unexpected for me . When I read about the Portuguese architecture that is still being preserved, that was enough to make me go on a culture tour in Goa !
If you are someone who loves to spend time marveling at beautiful paintings and amazing architecture then Old Goa is where you need to be.

The Basilica of Bom Jesus - which is a 400 year old church is one of the UNESCO world heritage centers. It is magnificent with mind blowing work of art and paintings within.

To top it off, the drive through the small alleys of old Goa with the bright multicolored little houses transports you to a different era.

Also got to know from one of the locals that within the town, for every certain specified area it is a mandate to have a school, a medical center and a grocery shop in the vicinity for convenience of the people living there.
Felt good to realize that in times like these where money dictates the very conscience of the people , we have small acts like this which reinforces your belief in humanity.

After an exquisite experience in South Goa, I was now determined that the Northern part needs to be explored .
Hence was planned the part 2 of my Goa trip the following year to North Goa.

And i planned it during the same time - Christmas week !

True to whatever I had heard , North Goa was one happening place to be in during Christmas and very very crowded too ....
There was Christmas eve Gala dinner party with everyone grooving to Ed Sheran and Chainsmokers ..... complete contrast to my South Goa Christmas night.

Probably this is what makes Goa what it is - two parallel worlds co-existing beautifully. And i wish it always remains this way and one does not corrupt the beauty of the other.

While the party side was super fun.... my favorite memory of Goa will always be the warm smiles of locals , loud church bells and of course watching the sun set as the choir sang in beautiful harmony ! 'Silent Night .. Holy Night .. all is calm .... all is bright ' ...

ICELAND - Where fire meets Ice !

As a little girl I was always fascinated by fairy tales and magic land. I remember reading about Arora Borealis and wondering how it wou...
